This could be the last game of the season but Wold U14`s went out with an impressive win against a previously unbeaten Braintree side.
Twenty boys and there parents made the long trip into Essex, showing how the strength of the squad has increased as the season has gone on, Sam number 2 joined the squad for the first time too.
Wold were switched on from the start and unusually for them scored the opening try as Sam powered through to score and Jesse scored the conversion. The speed of the Wold team was in evidence and they created another try as Callum went through to score, the con was missed
but Wold held a deserving 12 point lead. The rest of the half Braintree showed there strength as they consistently powered through but Wold resisted but eventually they got through to score a converted try and the half finished 7-12.
The second half was similar, Braintree consistently trying to break through the Wold line, where strong tackling and defence repelled them. Wold consistently using there passing skills and power running to make ground back into the opposition half and take the pressure away. Then a key moment as Sav ran down the left touchline only to be denied by a tackle at the line but James was on hand to pick up and score, no luck with conversion as the blustery wind made the kicks nearly impossible but Wold had a good lead again 7-17, Braintree now pushed for a score only to be denied by the strong Southwold defence, Wold were looking for opportunities to score too and strong runs out of defence eventually led to a chance for Sam to score in the corner and Wold now led 7-22. The last ten saw play mainly as Braintree pushed to score through the middle using there strong runners to dent the defence which once again eventually worked as clever play saw the attacker stretch his inspector arms to touch on the line. The conversion was successful and it was now 14-22 with two minutes to go. The defence stayed strong with no further alarms and after a penalty was awarded to Wold Jesse kicked into touch to confirm the win.
The reaction of the boys at the final whistle was one of jubilation and showed how the spirit of this team has grown and kept strong throughout the season, each one smiling and congratulating each other. They are a team. Today we saw strong running from Joe, Callum, Sam, Sav, George, Jesse who all tackled well too, good scrumming and defensive play from the pack, Charlie, Will, Nathan, Harrison, Fred L, Louis, Fred P, Alex, the defensive extended into Finney, Jake, Harry and new Sam. Arthur was effective as scrum half again and James as full back made some excellent ground as he ran the ball back a number of times.
Thanks to Braintree for the game and sportsmanship they showed at the end of the game.
