WOLD TAKE THE TITLE IN A PYSHICAL ENCOUNTER

The title finally was confirmed as Wold's, with four games to spare, in the hardest and closest encounter of their whole season to date.
With the bitter hard wind blowing directly into their faces, a Wold side forced into changes by injury and unavailability, simply turned on the style in the first half to score four great tries, take the bonus point they needed for the title by reaching the magic 86 point mark in the table, and all that was left to do was sore more in the second half and cruise to the win with the help of the wind.
Someone however rewrote the fairy tale and the second half was to prove more than difficult, and it brought out the character and mettle of the young Wold side with all credit to YM for making it such a battle.
At the start of the game YM had scored first with a penalty after five minutes for offside, but within five more minutes Wold had their first try when Josh Crick broke the defensive line initially and after some great forward play and three or four drives later Tim O Connell crashed over the line for a stunning team try and Wold took the lead by two points.
The conversion was almost impossible against the wind and YM restored their lead to one point at 6 - 5 when they slotted home a second penalty this time for a Wold player holding on to the ball after a tack.le
Half way through the half, Wold won a penalty of their own and kicked for position in the corner. From the lineout Sam Webb caught the ball at the back and the whole pack gathered to drive forward to within two metres of the YM line, and the ball was then fed out to the left and Josh Crick's pace took him past his opposite man and he dived over for another great try out wide which again made the conversion attempt by Ben Haddingham pretty much impossible which left Wold four points in the lead.
On the half hour Josh Crick broke the line again and great backing up from the forwards first by James Hall and then by Chris Aldous who then fed Stuart Popplewell to score another impressive try again wide on the left and again the conversion was missed but the score moved on to 6 - 15 in Wolds favour.
It looked like the score would remain the same until half time but Ben Balls had other ideas and having broken a tackle on the halfway line burst forward at pace making gaining nearly thirty metres before he was held but he managed to feed the ball to James Hall who was not going to be caught and scored Wold's fourth again out on the left and again despite coming so close the kick was missed by Haddingham but Wold had their precious bonus point as the ref blew the whistle for the break.
Tim O Connell had to be replaced at half time with a back injury but at that time Wold were confident of a reasonably sure win coming their way.
YM had other ideas and their four Fijians in particular began to grow in confidence and batter the Wold defence with some of the most aggressive and impressive running with the ball Wold had encountered all season.

Injuries to James Barton, Pete Holmes and Sam Webb were to follow with
Tim O Connell bravely having to come back on the pitch as did James Barton when Scott Sinfield also got injured.
Wold bravely held on with several people now out of position until the 70th minute when the YM full back gathered a Ben Haddingham positional kick well, and made good ground before passing to their centre to score running past the injured Scott Sinfield who tried bravely to stop him.
The kick was converted and YM did it again within two minutes again from a Haddingham clearing kick with almost the same result but this time out wider on the left and the conversion was missed this time leaving Wold with the precious two point
18 - 20 advantage with eight minutes still to play.
With the forced changes through injury Wold simply had to batten down the hatches, which they did admirably with some simply great tackling to see out the match for the win and consequently the league title was theirs.
YM deserve great credit for their second half performance where other teams would have capitulated, and for only possibly the second time this whole season, it was Wold who were glad to hear the final whistle.
When all the Wold players realised what that win meant their title celebrations began in earnest, and now the rest of the season will be all about their 100 % win record being maintained and possibly passing the 100 point mark in the table
Hopefully the several wounded soldiers will recover in time for the home match against Swaffham next Saturday on the Common
