Wolds Power Keeps 100% record going

If anybody thought that this was going to be a relatively easy away win for Wold on Saturday, those thoughts were quickly erased and it was clear from the first quarter that Wold were in for a torrid time from this fierce young and recently recruited Thurston side.
In almost perfect conditions on a well prepared Thurston pitch the game started with some frantic play by both sides with play moving all over the pitch and territory and possession just about even with no real sign of Wolds superiority as indicated by the two teams relative table positions. This twenty minute period saw Wold miss the first penalty kick to take the lead and Thurston subsequently miss two, one of which came back off the post and was only just scrappily cleared to touch by Wold
The deadlock was eventually broken following good ball won at a Wold scrum about 40 metres out and the ball went out to the right along the line before quick thinking by Chippy Middleditch at nine saw the ball quickly spun back to the left and two further quick passes saw Scottie Sinfield on the left wing burst through at pace to score wide on the left for a fine try that was to be well converted by Middleditch and give Wold a 0-7 lead.
Almost straight from the kick off Wold were caught offside and Thurston missed their third kickable penalty in a row to leave Wold a little flattered by their lead
The five minute period before half time however was to be the most frantic of the game.
First off following a sustained period of Wold pressure camped in the Thurston twenty two, Wold crept ever nearer to the Thurston line going beautifully through three or four phases of possession and changes of direction until eventually Ritchie Thickett on the right wing dived over , was nearly held up but managed to roll cleverly to his left to touch down for Wolds second deserved try but the conversion was narrowly missed to bring the score to 0-12 in Wolds favour
With half time imminent maybe Wold mentally had already started the break, and before the crowd had time to draw breath the young Thurston backs were breaking down the left towards the Wold line and a fine delayed pass by their outside centre put the miniscule but nippy winger in the corner for a really well worked try which saw the Wold defence broken in that manner for one of the very few times this whole season. The conversion, nearly from the touchline was missed but Thurston went off at half time with a great mental boost for both the players and their supporters
With all the excitement just before the break, the eagerly awaited second half was pretty eventless for the first twenty minutes with neither side buckling in defence despite the efforts of both sets of backs
It was Thurston who eventually added to their score next from a penalty and their first successful kick at goal got the expected roar from the Thurston faithful and the gap narrowed to seven points

The Thurston score saw Wold spring into life almost straight from the kick off when Ben Balls caught the ball from a Thurston kick over the top wide to the left and powered his way 30 metres forward at pace breaking tackles with his trademark hand offs, a sight the Wold travelling supporters had missed for some time, and from the resulting ruck which followed his eventual arrest just ten metres short of the Thurston line the ball was fed out to the left. With the team still positioned basically from the previous Wold restart, when the ball was fed quickly along the line it was
James " Ballsy " Hall who found himself where the outside centre should normally be out towards the left wing and he surged forward and committed the defenders well before passing out to Paul Ellwood who as a second row giant made a great job of finishing as a diving winger for his first try for the Wold and the big Geordie lad couldn't hide his big smile which was well deserved, The kick from the touchline was missed to leave the score at 8 -17 with quarter of an hour to go
Praise must go to the young pair of Thurston half backs who were getting difficult ball for most of the match to say the least due to Wold's dominance up front, but they made the moist of what possession they got and the Thurston backs continued to attack whenever they could but were unable to break the Wold back line defence for a second time in the entire second half.
Wold sealed the game at the death with a trademark push over try from the Wold pack with Skipper Sam Webb controlling the ball well with his feet before touching down. Chippy Middleditch duly converted from almost in front of the posts to make the final score 8-24 in Wold's favour with their fourth try giving them the precious bonus point just before the final whistle
A break in the fixtures sees Wold without a game next week, but their sixteen wins from as many games sees them now only need ten points from their last six games to secure promotion as league champions and even the doubting Thomas's must now consider this a real possibility. A tremendous performance, but all of the upcoming last six league games will see teams doing their upmost to spoil Wold's 100% record so tough times ahead
