MATCH REPORT FROM SOUTHWOLD V HOLT

Written by David Vaughan

For half an hour or so with the aid of the strong wind behind them, Holt battled hard to stay in this match and it did look as if Wold were going to have a very difficult afternoon
Luke Wade slotted a penalty for Wold in under a minute but they did not add to that score until on 18 minutes, a horror of a sliced kick from the Holt scrum half handed possession to Wold who passed the ball quickly down the line for Sam Casbolt to score in the left corner
Wade’s conversion attempt was impossible in to the face of the wind, but four minutes later the Holt scrum half made up for his mistake when following a five metre penalty he dummied to pass and stepped inside to score to the left of the posts, and with the kick going wide it was then 8 – 5 to Wold and looked to all the world as if it was going to be tit for tat all afternoon
Realistically however that was the last time Holt were really in this game by Wold racing to a 27 – 5 lead by half time with some amazing ball handling despite the strong wind in their faces. Josh Wallis cut in to the line for the first of his two tries, converted by Wade and then he ran in again from nearly the half way line after an Ollie Carlstroem break up the middle. Wallis attempted the conversion himself but the ball blew back from the posts when heading over. The last points in the half came from a Cameron Bonner try as he burst through the Holt defence with sheer power and Wade slotted the easy conversion from just outside the line of the right hand post
After the break it was one-way traffic as within the first five minutes Wold tries had come from Jacob English and Cemil Duruk. Wades first conversion attempt came back off the post and the second was good so Wold quickly had a 39 – 5 lead and the game was over as a contest.
Two tries followed for Luke Wade himself, the first he converted and the second he didn’t as just as he went to make contact with the ball it blew off the tee and his hastily attempted drop goal spooned wide as Holt charged towards him and with twenty minutes left it was 51 – 5 in Wold’s favour
Phil Pymer at No 8 went over wide on the left, Wade’s kick missing the right hand post, but Wade slotted the next one from under the posts when Ollie Carlstroem burst through on his own for his first try of the day to score unchallenged, with three minutes of the game left
It was now 63 – 5 to Wold, but Carlstroem was not finished, and he broke down the blind side from a Wold scrum and raced clear to score his second and the final try of the game just before the whistle and give Wold another five points to end the game
With the five points Wold hold on to second place in the league behind Norwich for Xmas, but they say a farewell to Ollie Carlstroem and Josh Wallis who are off travelling to Asia and Austrailia in early January 2020.
These two young, prolific and exceptionally talented players, both scored two tries on the day, and will be greatly missed, but the Club wishes them well and hope they return in the not too distant future, unharmed!

MOM for Wold, Tom Gair
Awesome for the second week running in only his second 1st XV game
