MATCH REPORT FROM NORWICH V SOUTHWOLD

Written by David Vaughan

Handling the ball and free running rugby was just not possible in this weather dominated encounter as the ball slid repeatedly in and out of all the player’s hands in the driving wind and rain
Great tries make for great games but this game had none, albeit both sides tackled hard and never relented in their efforts to open up the opposition but but no avail
Instead the game was littered with penalties and stoppages and will not live long in the memory of the soaked and wind battered crowd who braved the touchlines to watch
The score simply reflected the number of penalties awarded to each side with the home side gaining over twenty penalties to Wold’s ten
The encounter never really came to life or lived up to expectation, but the teams both battled hard in this top of the league clash
The only real excitement came in the last five minutes of the game when Wold went through phase after phase within five metres of the Norwich line, knowing a converted try would win them the game, whilst the referees whistle would end it.
It wasn’t to be for Wold however, as Norwich’s well organised defence held strong, finally forcing winger Jacob English in to touch and the game was theirs much to the delight and resulting cheers of the home crowd.
The result was fair, and Norwich were very gracious in their victory.
There was absolutely nothing to choose between the sides in open play and as the Norwich skipper said post game, the result could have easily been reversed on another day.
It was a true statement and there really was nothing else of note to report here in terms of on field action, with the conditions completely to blame rather than the two sets of players
Not many sides will get a losing bonus point at Norwich this season, but Wold deserved theirs and can take great heart from their performance against the table topping Lions

MOM for Wold: Sam Webb who carried well and made good yards all afternoon
