Match report from Southwold v Wanstead

Match report written by David Vaugham

Wold were three points up in less than two minutes from a Luke Wade penalty in front of the posts and it was 10 - 0 five minutes later when Jonny Utting broke down the right wing and fed the ball inside to Ollie Carlstroem who forced his way over for Wold's first try. Wade added the two points from wide
Wold got another on twenty minutes when a great team break started in their own half and ended with Duncan Hume running in under the posts for a great counter attacking score with the resulting additional seven points
Wanstead rallied with a driving forwards try which was converted and when Hume was yellow carded just before half time for stripping the ball on the ground close to the Wold posts, the result was another three points for Wanstead and a fourteen man start for Wold in the second half
Even with a man down it was Wold who scored first when Josh Wallis went over for a try to the left of the Wanstead posts and Wade added the extra two points
At about this point in the game the Wold front row of Adam Smith, James Hall and Des Brett began to dominate proceedings in the scrum as their opposite numbers began to tire.
This was first highlighted when a Wold scrum five metres out shoved the Wanstead pack back and Hume at No 8, now back on the pitch having served his time, gathered the ball and dived over for Wold's next try and that man Wade slotted the extra two points again from wide right
Really from that point on it was one way traffic, as Wold's forwards gained lots of possession and the backs were clinical in their running and finishing
Josh Crick broke the defensive back line on 65 minutes and fed Jonny Utting who ran round to score under the posts and with the easy Wade conversion the score climbed to 30 - 10 in the home sides favour
Within three minutes a high Wold kick was misjudged by the Wanstead full back and it was Josh Crick who was quickest to respond and he gathered the ball and fed Jacob English on the left wing who was too quick to catch and again put the ball down under the Wanstead posts and Wold were ahead 45 - 10, and out of sight
Wold kept the pressure on and for the last ten minutes of the game and although they tried Wanstead seemingly could not get out of their 22, but in fairness to them they had lots of possession, kept the ball in hand for two or three long periods but failed to make any progress up the pitch and that insistence of keeping the ball in hand and not clearing with a touch kick attempt was to be their downfall for Wold's last try two minutes from time
Wanstead lost the ball wide on the left after some fierce Wold tacking and it was Man of the Match Jobe Brookes who sprinted clear to score to the biggest cheer of the day, especially from his team mates, as he leaves for a long trip to Australia this coming week
Wade slotted the conversion again to make the final score 52 -10 to Wold, and the long awaited win, had been accomplished in some style
This was the Wold of old, and playing with this strength and flair, the team should cement their place in the league this season with ease

Best wishes to Jobe, Sherard and Hugo for their trip down under and beyond - just get back safe at some point
