Match Report From Saffron Walden V Southwold

Written by David Vaughan

For the first twenty minutes it was a pretty evenly matched encounter and at the end of that quarter Wold had a narrow one point lead from two Luke Wade penalties to an unconverted try by Waldon. There was lots of equal possession and Wold had several opportunities when they themselves could off had a try and at 5 - 6 to the visitors it seemed it was going to be a close encounter
However Waldon shifted up a gear and in the next quarter up to half time their strong running backs crossed over for three very similar unanswered tries, and with one successful conversion from three at half time they had a healthy 22 - 6 lead
Luke Wade slotted another Wold penalty within two minutes of the restart but five minutes later Waldon were awarded a penalty of their own and a quickly taken tap penalty caught Wold napping with another simple Waldon try by the side of the Wold posts and Waldon increased their lead by another seven points
It seemed now that every time the Waldon backs were in possession they were likely to score and score they did on 57 minutes after swinging the ball from left to right and the breaking the wold defence as the ball swung back towards the left and with the conversion good the game was now really out of sight for Wold as they now trailed by 36 - 9
Only three minutes later it was game over with a Wold missed tackle in centre field and an easy run in for yet another try for Waldon backs wide on the left, but too wide for a successful conversion
A quarter of the match to go, 41 - 9 to Waldon and it was a worry what the final try count and score may be for the watching Wold away fans
They need not have worried however as Wold seemed to come alive in the last twenty minutes and dominated possession and all the remaining scoring
Wold got their first try of the match in the 65th minute when they were awarded a penalty under the posts and chose to scrummage. They won good ball and the ball quickly went out to Charles Buckley on the left wing who jinked inside and offloaded to Jonathan Utting at full back to force his way over the line.
Luke Wade narrowly missed his conversion but was to score a try himself twelve minutes later. Another Wold penalty saw Wade kick to the corner for territory, and Wold won their lineout five metres out and the ball was fed out quickly for Wade to crash his way to a left handed finger tip try with his arm fully outstretched

Seven more points to Wold as Wade converted his own try but with less than tree minutes remaining Wold's revival was all too late and even a losing bonus point was out of reach
The 41 - 21 score line at the whistle was a fair reflection of the game, and it was Saffron Waldons day courtesy of their strong and powerful back line which was the difference between the two sides, in what had been a good game
No shame in the Wold performance at this level epitomised by their late fight back
