Southwolds impressive start to the season came to an abrupt end on Saturday at the hands of a well drilled and passionate Ely side. Ely started the brighter of the two teams and despite playing into some near hurricane conditions they controlled the first 15 minutes with there centres making ground on every occasion they got the ball however solid defence from Southwold kept them out. When Southwold did win the ball they either dropped or knocked on promptly giving the ball back to the visitors. That seemed to be the story of the half however against the run of play Southwold won a penalty which Sammy Harmor converted from a good distance out. By half time two further penalties were traded, one by Southwold and one from Ely giving an interval score of 6-3 to Southwold but really not deserved.
Southwold certainly came into the game more in the second half however could not put any points on the board and continued to spill passes at crucial moments and make error after error. Mid way through the half Ely, after continued pressure went over for a try which was converted meaning Southwold had to play catch up rugby. This did prompt the best passage of play and both Tim O'Connell and Captain James Hall broke through in the last 10 minutes but excellent scrambled defence from Ely relieved the pressure. The last 5 minutes was all Southwold and but they could not get the ball over the line and Ely held out to be deserved winners.
