WOLD DIG IN TO COME AWAY WITH A WIN

Match Report written by David Vaughan

Wold started the game at 100 miles per hour eager for their second win in a row on a wet and muddy pitch at Stowmarket.
Right from the kick off Wold went on the attack, and were camped in the opposition twenty two and from the first maul of the game they turned over the ball and in the blink of an eye the ball was fed out to Josh Crick who drew his man well and gave a great pass out to Richie Thickett to go over for a great try.
Russell Hume slotted home the conversion and Wold had a 0-7 lead much to the pleasure of the travelling supporters.
Within a few minutes however the Wold back line were up too quick and were penalised for offside in front of their posts and the lead was cut to four points from the resulting easy kick
Paul Ellwood had to come on at 8 when Duncan Hume suffered a calf muscle injury
Russell Hume missed a pretty easy penalty kick five minutes later, and with it the chance to restores the seven point lead but Wold at that time were simply piling on the pressure and had a series of drives desperately defended by Stowmarket but after a long spell camped on the opposition line Wold were awarded a penalty after 23 minutes for handling in the ruck, which possibly should have been a penalty try.
They chose to take a scrum five and drove Stowmarket back towards their line and a certain try and in desperation Stowmarket tried to wheel the scrum illegally and this time the referee did award the penalty try under the posts. Russell Hume made the easy conversion and the score moved to 3 - 14 in Wolds favour
Substitute Paul Ellwood then had to come off himself with a chest injury and Sam Webb moved over to No 8 but there was no further score before half time
The second half saw a yellow card for Josh Williams at prop for not rolling away and the scrums had to go uncontested, with Ellwood the front row replacement already injured himself, which meant Stowmarket were guaranteed scrum ball and that did get a grip on possession as well as the game in general
Kieran Morling was then also yellow carded, for tugging someone back without the ball and Wold were down to thirteen.
The lack of numbers eventually told and from a Wold lineout that went over to Stowmarket in the wind they moved the ball rapidly across the pitch to score a great try wide on the left which was closely followed by a great conversion and Wold's lead was reduced to only four points after dominating most of the match.
Stowmarket sensed a chance of a win, against the odds and piled on the pressure in the last eight minutes. Josh Williams came back on the pitch after his ten minute forced absence and at least Wolds forward dominance was restored but it was the Stowmarket backs who kept attacking time and time again but without breaking the resilient Wold defence

It was a nervous time for the black and yellow supporters but suddenly right at the death the forwards won turnover ball and Jonny Stephenson raced down the pitch backed up by James Barton and after a couple of desperate tackles but even better Wold offloads it was Jonny Clarke who dived over for a great counter attacking try and the away win was assured.
The conversion was missed but as the ball landed wide of the posts the whistle blew for full time with the score 10 -19 to Wold
Wold had made hard work of a game they should have won far more convincingly, with their pack dominant and skipper Sam Webb mercurial in the lineout. Poor clearance kicking missing touch and one or two crazy decisions at quick penalties were the principal culprits.
Wold must learn to be more clinical in defending their own territory and the results will keep coming as their class will then be allowed to more easily show through
All in all though a good win in wet and muddy conditions where ball handling was at times almost impossible for both teams
Special mention for James Barton at full back who had his best game for the Club and swept up loads of loose ball brilliantly at the back and deservedly won the MOM award on the day
Bring on Beccles next Saturday on the Common for the much anticipated local shoot out at the OK Wold corral.

Arn the Wold !!
