WOLD STARTING TO BUILD MOMENTUM

Match report written by David Vaughan

This match removed any doubt as to whether Wold would cope with the standards of the higher division, following last seasons promotion, as they were simply too good for the visitors.
The final score flattered Upminster a little but it was Wold's lack of consistent concentration that prevented the home side from getting a points tally well in to the sixties, not their skills
Wolds first try on the ten minute mark, came from a penalty wide on the left which they ran with a series of drives from the pack and eventually the ball was fed out to the backs and Josh Crick broke the defensive line to score under the posts and an easy conversion followed.
Upminster narrowed the margin five minutes later with a massive 40m penalty kick which Wold had conceded for crossing during a promising attack, but it only took a further two minutes to increase the lead to 12 - 3. A penalty on the Upminster 22 was kicked to the corner and from the resulting lineout the ball was weel caught by Webb at the back of the line and the forwards simply held the ball in and drove towards the line for second row Stuart Butler to touch down.
Wold continued to dominate all over the park but did concede another penalty well within their own half but incredibly the visitors opted for a scum which did seem strange since Wold had been pushing them back at every scrum up until then. The decision proved fatal and led to Wolds best try of the afternoon. In their desperation to win the ball Upminster got the shove on too early and were penalised. James Hall who was having a storming game took the penalty quickly and made 35m before passing to the ever present Josh Crick backing up who charged on before passing to Pete Holmes who was stopped eventually but managed to pop the ball up to No 8 Duncan Hume to run on freely to score under the posts and Wolds lead was increased by a further seven points. Fantastic team support for a great try.
Five minutes before half time James Hall made a fantastic try saving tackle right on the Wold line and the ball was knocked on for a Wold scrum. Wold were penalised for turning the scrum and the resultant kick was easily converted for the tree points but it was not to be the last score of the half
Wold camped in the visitors 22 for the next five minutes and eventually won a penalty. This time Chippy Middleditch caught the Essex side napping and quickly took a tap, and went on a mazy run to score under the posts and by half time it meant Wold had built a twenty point lead at 26 - 6, and had totally dominated the first half
To all intents and purposes it seemed as Wold would go on to score a hat full of tries after the break and especially since the game was taking a toll on the visitors who had suffered some bad injuries and by early in the second half had used all three subs
It was at this point however that Wold's concentration lapsed and it coincided with the Essex lads getting their dander up and for the third quarter of the match they took the game to Wold ending in the 65th minute with a fine try from a set backs move under the Wold posts and a well deserved seven points
The score did galvanise Wold back into their previous groove and in quick succession they scored a pushover try from a scrum with Chippy Middleditch touching down at nine, quickly followed by a great try from Ben Balls powering over after Wold had won great ball again at the back of the line and a set move had seen Ben coming off his wing for the well worked move and Wold were now 25 points clear with five minutes left on the clock
However there was more action to follow to say the least, and two minutes from the whistle Wold chose to scrummage following a penalty ten metres out from the Upminster line and Having prexented Chippy Middleditch with gret ball he stepped inside and wqas brought down only a metre short of the line. From the ruck that followed young Alex Skitch in the back row topped off a fine individual performance, having given a tackling masterclass all afternoon, by twisting over the line to score a well deserved try and with the conversion made it seemed the 45 - 13 scoreline at that time would be the final one
All credit to Upminster however as from the kick off they won good ball and charged up the left wing, barely troubled by the Wold defence to score the last try of the game right by the corner flag and the game ended at 45-18 to the home side

A very competent display from Wold for a deserved win but against the stronger sides they will have to play to their best for eighty minutes and not just sixty, but the watching crowd were happy and the win moved Wold up to fifth and into the top half of the table with ten points from their first four games, which overall gives a very sound start to their season in London NE 3
